About Hobbs, NM

Hobbs is a city in Lea County, New Mexico, with 40,508 residents at the 2020 census, the state's seventh-largest city. It was founded in 1907 when James Isaac Hobbs set up a homestead, and it grew fast after the Midwest Oil Company struck oil in 1927. U.S. Routes 62 and 180 run through town, east 29 miles to Seminole, Texas, and west 69 miles to Carlsbad. State Road 18 leads northwest to Lovington, the county seat, and south 61 miles to Kermit, Texas.

Hobbs lies less than 4 miles west of the Texas border, and its land drains east toward Texas through Seminole Draw and Monument Draw. The city has a semiarid climate with hot summers and chilly winters, and about 70 percent of its rain falls in the warm half of the year. The former Hobbs Army Airfield north of town is now the Hobbs Industrial Air Park. New Mexico Junior College and the University of the Southwest are both here.
